We check your blood pressure and fit the cuff.
Your joint isn’t ready for heavy weight yet. Your muscle can’t wait that long. Blood flow restriction uses a cuff to get real strength gains from light loads, so you don’t lose ground while you heal.
What It Is
Blood flow restriction uses an inflatable cuff, placed high on the thigh or arm like a blood pressure cuff, that partially limits blood flow leaving the limb while letting blood flow in. That creates the muscle fatigue of heavy lifting, at a fraction of the load, often around 20 to 30 percent of what you could normally lift.
It’s built for the moment your joint can’t handle heavy loading yet, but your muscle is losing strength every day it waits. Post-op knees, post-op shoulders, and arthritic joints are the classic cases.
Your therapist checks your blood pressure, applies a calibrated cuff at a safe pressure, and stays with you the entire time. It’s always one piece of a bigger plan, never a stand-alone treatment.
Applied and monitored by your therapist, every time
What It Helps
If your joint can’t take a heavy load yet, this is how you keep the muscle from falling behind.
What A Session Looks Like
1
We check your blood pressure and fit the cuff.
2
You move through light exercises the cuff makes count.
3
We release the cuff and reassess for next time.
Why It Works
Strength gains without loading a healing joint.
Less muscle loss while your body recovers.
A safe option early, when heavy weight isn’t.
Monitored pressure, checked and adjusted every session.
Pairs Well With
Questions, Answered
No. The cuff partially restricts venous return while still allowing blood in, at a pressure that’s calibrated to you, not just tightened by feel. Your therapist checks and adjusts that pressure every single session.
Certain clotting disorders and vascular or cardiac conditions rule it out. Your cause-first evaluation screens for these before we ever fit a cuff, so you only get this if it’s genuinely safe for you.
Light weight alone doesn’t create the fatigue your muscle needs to grow stronger. The cuff creates that fatigue at a fraction of the load, tricking the muscle into a heavy-lifting response it can’t get any other safe way right now.
