Why It Happens
Your neck doesn’t hurt for no reason. And it’s almost never just one thing. It’s usually some mix of four culprits: an irritated joint low in the neck that’s the classic source of tension headaches. Muscles across your upper back and shoulders working overtime to hold your head up. Deep neck stabilizers that quietly weakened after your last flare-up. And daily habits, hours forward over a screen, phone tucked against your ear, that keep reloading the same spot before it heals.
None of that shows up on a quick glance. It takes a real, cause-first evaluation to sort out which one is actually driving your pain and your headaches. That’s why rest, ice, or a generic stretching sheet so often falls short: they treat the symptom, not the source. Find the real cause, and the fix gets obvious.
The Honest Truth
Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for a neck like yours.
Weeks 1–2
Pain
Hands-on techniques ease the irritated joint and muscle guarding behind your headaches, starting your very first visit.
Weeks 2–6
Prime
Targeted mobility work restores the rotation and side-bending that’s been driving your headaches.
Weeks 6–10
Perform
Progressive strengthening for the deep neck and upper back muscles that hold your head up all day.
Weeks 10+
Prevent
Posture and workstation habits get tested under real conditions before you’re cleared to go all-in: that’s the endpoint, not just another appointment.

Questions, Answered
Usually not, and it’s rarely the first step. Most neck pain and tension-type headaches improve without imaging, and scans often turn up disc and joint changes in necks that don’t hurt at all. We start with a hands-on, cause-first evaluation to find what’s actually driving your pain and your headaches, and if imaging ever becomes genuinely necessary, we’ll help you get it. You don’t have to wait on a scan to start feeling better.
In most cases, yes, with the right adjustments. Total rest tends to make a neck stiffer and weaker, which sets up the next headache. The key is dosing the right movement and posture breaks for your specific neck, which is exactly what a Doctor of PT sorts out at your evaluation, then progresses safely as you improve.
Most patients feel meaningful change within 4–6 visits. A full plan for neck pain and headaches runs through all four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, typically over 8–10 weeks, depending on how long you’ve been dealing with it. Either way, you get a plan with an endpoint: you’ll always know which phase you’re in and what’s left, not an open-ended string of appointments.
