What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease treatment is available at Specialized Physical Therapy – Burlington and Specialized Physical Therapy – Cherry Hill.  But, what is  Parkinson’s Disease? Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement and ultimately, overall quality of life. Many people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease experience changes in the movement affecting their quality of life. These changes impact strength, endurance, balance, gait, range of motion, and coordination.

People with Parkinson’s disease typically do not realize how much of an impact the disease has on their bodies early on, and a new sense of “normal” is established. This new normal ultimately leads to movements being smaller and slower. But just because a disease is progressive does NOT mean that it has to be debilitating.

What Can Be Done to Treat Parkinson’s Disease?

Nearly 8 million people are living with Parkinson’s disease worldwide, and the most effective treatment to improve quality of life in this population is movement. Exercise, in conjunction with medications prescribed by your doctor if appropriate, leads to the best overall improvement in movement quality.  At Specialized Physical Therapy – Burlington and Specialized Physical Therapy – Cherry Hill, we have Parkinson’s Disease specialists who are trained in the LSVT BIG program.  LSVT BIG certified clinicians provide one-on-one treatment to that is tailored to the specific needs of each individual.

How Does the LSVT BIG Program Help?

The LSVT BIG program is specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s disease at all stages to improve movement and function. The LSVT BIG Program at Specialized Physical Therapy – Burlington and Specialized Physical Therapy – Cherry Hill are optimized to fit each person individually to work on their specific deficits.

The LSVT BIG Program can impact movement by helping patient’s brains learn through repetition. The more you practice something, the better you get at it. Exercise is no different: the more you show your body how to exercise properly, the better it learns to perform. The LSVT BIG Program at Specialized Physical Therapy – Burlington and Specialized Physical Therapy – Cherry Hill have been proven to improve quality of movement because there is a high degree of repetition. This not only makes it easier to remember what to do for those with cognitive impairments, but it allows the muscles to feel what a true “normal” movement is supposed to be, and change from small and slow movements to a more functional amplitude and pace.

You’ll see in the video below one of our patients walking before and mid-way through her treatment plan, and the startling difference in not only her movement but her posture, as well.
